The Patient Voice

I’ve lost hope of ever getting better,’ says a mother of two as I visit her for therapy whilst on dialysis.  When I ask about her treatment and next steps in care she says, ‘I don’t really know. I don’t ask much. The doctor knows best and when I have my consultations, I get a bit nervous and just laugh off my illness. ‘

I’m wondering what the medical team might know about this outwardly smiling mother and her life circumstances. Has she told anyone, or have they had the time to ask about her mood, her emotions, her family life and the impact on her struggle with managing her appointments and health?

Holistic care

Patients deserve to be seen in a holistic way - taking into account personal circumstances, mood and emotional wellbeing.  Only when we have the whole picture can supportive healing, self-care and wellbeing begin.

Working together

Who listens to you, who is curious about your personal story and how your health issues impact your quality of life?

What is something you need but you haven’t asked for?

Have you managed to share your story honestly and courageously with your medical team when it feels safe to do so?  What support might help you? What do others need to know?  What aren’t you saying?

You may find it helpful to make notes before consultations or take someone with you.

Counselling support may also help you find your voice.
